Task 2 Case Study 3

Stranded

In this film there are three girls who are on a road trip. However the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Lucy who drives the car, tries to find reception to call a repair company to come and fix the car, a mysterious figure kidnaps her. Therefore the two remaining girls get out from the car in the hope of that they will their find their missing friend. However another one of the friends goes missing and the third friend tries to escape, only for her to be joined by the mysterious figure in the car.

Editing
Cuts- the cutting rate varies. For example, at the beginning of the film it is quite slow as they are only trying to show us what is happening as the girls are on a road trip. However when it starts to get a bit tense the cutting rate quickens in order to add that tension and make us feel a sense of nervousness.

Mis-en-scene
Location- a field was appropriate as it looked empty and looks like somewhere where you would not get reception and if it is quiet and abandoned then it could be creepy as it was in the film.
Costume- the three girls are wearing comfortable, casual clothes in order to get that sense of them going on a college trip. The mysterious figure has a long black cloak on so we don't know who he is and what he looks like,
Props- The car, the phone and the radio were all pivotal in order for the story to play out.

Sound
Non diagetic sounds- the music playing in the intro and the mood music to create tension during the film.
Diagetic sounds- the dialogue which was well scripted as it sounded quite realistic and corresponded to what was happening.

Camera
Close up- just as Lucy is about to reach through to a repair company. this is an effective shot as it shows how they are in a remote area where they are far away from help.
Use of a handheld camera- allows the viewer to immerse with their film and undertake the role of the suspicious figure, who can also been seen as the kidnapper of Lucy, as they chase the girls.
Wide shot- when the mysterious figure runs across the field, it makes us feel scared for the girls as they are not alone.
Over the shoulder- when one of the girls is looking in the fields shouting 'where are you' and then we see as soon as she turns around she is confronted by the mysterious figure.

This film has a linear narrative structure to it. This is effective because it allows the film to build with tension and interesting the audience enough for it to culminate in a powerful close. I think that this case study made me think back to my own film as mine is also a thriller, so the shooting in a remote area could be quite useful to the short film that I am making. This will create more suspense to the film because when there is a sense of unknowing, we automatically feel afraid.
