Evaluation of treatment

Overall, the treatment of our story went well. However , there was some feedback which allowed us to think about our short film and evaluate it on how we can slightly modify it to improve and make it to the best of our abilities.
One of the main criticisms was that 5 actors was way too  much. It would be very difficult to manage, however for us we think it is an issue which we can manage as we have already got a few actors who are extremely reliable and we definitely believe it would not be a problem for us to actually get the final actors.
Another criticism is that as it is a thriller, we had to make sure that the content was very gripping and that it did not move to a comedy. So that is something we have to work on in our short film in order to be able to stick to the theme and make it an effective short film. We can do this with various things such as the actual script down to the music or even the actual camera shots.
Although we mentioned that our film will have minimum dialogue, it will have to have a little bit of dialogue and we have agreed to create a script. However we have to make sure that there is not that much as it is very difficult to create a good film with correct dialogue.

Task 2 Case Study 3

Stranded

In this film there are three girls who are on a road trip. However the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Lucy who drives the car, tries to find reception to call a repair company to come and fix the car, a mysterious figure kidnaps her. Therefore the two remaining girls get out from the car in the hope of that they will their find their missing friend. However another one of the friends goes missing and the third friend tries to escape, only for her to be joined by the mysterious figure in the car.

Editing
Cuts- the cutting rate varies. For example, at the beginning of the film it is quite slow as they are only trying to show us what is happening as the girls are on a road trip. However when it starts to get a bit tense the cutting rate quickens in order to add that tension and make us feel a sense of nervousness.

Mis-en-scene
Location- a field was appropriate as it looked empty and looks like somewhere where you would not get reception and if it is quiet and abandoned then it could be creepy as it was in the film.
Costume- the three girls are wearing comfortable, casual clothes in order to get that sense of them going on a college trip. The mysterious figure has a long black cloak on so we don't know who he is and what he looks like,
Props- The car, the phone and the radio were all pivotal in order for the story to play out.

Sound
Non diagetic sounds- the music playing in the intro and the mood music to create tension during the film.
Diagetic sounds- the dialogue which was well scripted as it sounded quite realistic and corresponded to what was happening.

Camera
Close up- just as Lucy is about to reach through to a repair company. this is an effective shot as it shows how they are in a remote area where they are far away from help.
Use of a handheld camera- allows the viewer to immerse with their film and undertake the role of the suspicious figure, who can also been seen as the kidnapper of Lucy, as they chase the girls.
Wide shot- when the mysterious figure runs across the field, it makes us feel scared for the girls as they are not alone.
Over the shoulder- when one of the girls is looking in the fields shouting 'where are you' and then we see as soon as she turns around she is confronted by the mysterious figure.

This film has a linear narrative structure to it. This is effective because it allows the film to build with tension and interesting the audience enough for it to culminate in a powerful close. I think that this case study made me think back to my own film as mine is also a thriller, so the shooting in a remote area could be quite useful to the short film that I am making. This will create more suspense to the film because when there is a sense of unknowing, we automatically feel afraid.

Task 2 case study 2

This short film is about a girl who is the lone survivor after her family died by drowning. However it is as if 'water' has come back for her, because she escaped fate. She escaped death and water has come back for vengeance. The film starts with text quoting Da Vinci saying 'Water is the driving force of all nature.' This suggests that water is the most dominant thing out there and we are just pawns in water's game. Then after the film has ended and we find out that water gets her and she dies, the film ends with the quote 'All water has a perfect memory, and is forever trying to get back to where it was.' Because this is after she has died. it makes the quote much more sinister and chilling because it suggests that it is in water's nature to come get us if we have escaped death by it.

Editing
Eyeline match- when she is looking at the TV.
Cuts- the cutting rate is very fast when she is dying to make it very chaotic as the way she is dying by falling and bumping her head then falling into the bath is very chaotic and unusual. The cutting rate helps emphasise this. However during the beginning the cutting rate is quite slow because it is trying to add up tension and we are following the main character.
Fade to black- after the film has finished the scene fades to black to show us the quote to make us think more about the film and how water affects us.
Flashback- flashback of when she nearly drowned with her family

Mis-en-scene
Location- There is a scene where she is lying flat in a big pool of water as if it is a big ocean. this is effective because it shows how small and helpless we are to water and how much more powerful it is to us. Most of the film is taken place in her house and this makes it personal and it is trying to show how water can get you anywhere.
Costume- She is just wearing casual clothes and because it is the one year anniversary since her family drowned it could show that she just wants to be at home by herself and not be making a fuss. She just wants to be at home in a comfortable environment.
Props- Photos of her family to make it more emotive, phone, bottle of water to show all the different ways water can get to you, radio, newspaper and tv talking about her family drowning to give the background of the story.

Sound
There is no dialogue in this short film but it is very effective. It makes you not know what to really expect next. It creates a lot of tension and suspense.
Non-diegetic- There is a lot of mood music which also adds to the tension and suspense. It speeds up and that is when we know something bad is going to happen.

Camera
Wide shot- when she is lying in the water to show how small she is compared to the water,
Birds eye view- the tap when the water is pouring down
Establishing shots- shots of the photos and tv to let us know the story and get to know the character
Close up- phone to show that it will play a part in the story, all the things that have water related to them to show the emphasis of water in this film.
Extreme close up- her face to show her facial expressions and how she is feeling.
Long shots

This film has a linear narrative structure. It starts off with her in the water drowning but then she survived and then fast forwards later on in her life. This is effective because it makes the audience feel sympathetic for her as she has been through hard times as well as building up tension because we do not know what is going to happen next. I think that this film could influence my short film because it is really an effective thriller, I think this is put across by the use of the camera shots and how the cutting rate goes really slow then really fast. Also, the unique concept of the film is what makes it really captivating and this is effective.

Task 2 case study 1

Networked

This short film explores the way social networks have became integrated into modern day life, where many of us store 'digital' versions of lives, including our personal information, photos, videos and memories on the internet. It has become such a daily occurrence into people's lives that they believe they can't live without it. They are oblivious to the dangers that can occur.

Editing
Eyeline match- the film has used eyeline match when he is looking at the screen.
Cuts- the scene cuts whenever changing scene. Cutting rate varies; during the beginning it is slow as not much is happening and it is just showing what he is doing when he gets home. However it speeds up when something bad is going to happen.
Fade to black- after the title is shown the scene fades to black and then changes into the next scene.

Mis-en-scene
Location- the film was shot just outside the boy's house and inside his house.
Costume- he is just wearing tshirt and trousers to show he is a normal teenager. This suggests the normality that anyone can be on social networks. .
Props- the drink, the computer, the table.

Sound
diagetic sound- when he is pouring the drink and typing on the keyboard.
Non-diagetic- the fast paced music when he gets hit.
sting in the music- to create tension

Camera
Wide shot- when the boys are walking towards his house
Low angle- when the camera is looking up at the boys walking
Close up- when the camera is pointed at the screen to give emphasis on it
Medium shot- boy looking at screen which shows his facial expression and body language of looking happy while scrolling through Facebook.
Extreme close up- the 'if you like this you will die' page has been emphasised to show us that this has some sort of role in the film
Tilt- looks down at the boy dead on the floor but tilts vertically to show the screen h

This film has a linear narrative structure to it. This is effective because we get to see what Andy does as soon as he gets home from school and with it being linear it can build tension and suspense which leads to a climactic ending. This film, I believe will be a great influence on my short film because I found it very interesting and very gripping. The use of the social media and how the boy died by clicking on a page was quite enthralling.

Evaluation of practice task

Strengths:
Editing - The film was edited in a way that everything went in a linear structure.
Mis-En-Scene - Location was good as it matched the school scene, the outfits suited the scene as they were casual and matched the school feel.
Sound - Dialogue was clear and every person could be heard
Camera - Also we done a variety of takes to choose from which we were able to use in the final cut.

Weaknesses:
Lighting - Lighting kept changing from scene to scene making the film look unnatural and peculiar.
Sound - The sound was echoey as it was bouncing off the walls which makes it seem unprofessional.
Camera - Bad camera angles that didn't match the scene e.g. when talking to each other should be using eyeline match

Focus

There were both good and bad points in our practise short film task. A really strong point was the editing as our film was edited in a really good way because the events were clear from the beginning and it was in a linear structure. From the editing, we learnt how to make the film flow in transitions and we gained greater skills such as adding storied text at the end. For mis-en-scene, the location was effective as it matched the school scene and we shot it in a cafeteria. Also the outfits suited the scene as they were casual and matched the school feel. For sound the dialogue was clear and every person that was acting could be heard with clarity. With the camera, there were a lot of different shots such as bird's eye view and shot-reverse shot to use in the final cut which shows the variety of different shots we know.

However there were quite a few weaknesses and one of them was a problem with lighting. The light kept changing from scene to scene making the film look unnatural and peculiar. Also, although the dialogue was clear the sound was a little echoey and kept bouncing off the walls which makes it seem unprofessional. Some of the camera angles did not match the scene, for example when talking to each other we should be using eyeline match. Also the camera went out of focus on some shots so we need to work on that.

Summer task

Creating music videos for songs that havent been released yet.

IDEA 1- Eminem-Guts over fear ft Sia
Concept- Eminem reflects about his place in rap and how it has changed over years. He believes that all the different parts of his life have made him who he is today. He refers to how he used to be much darker back in the day, but now as a 41 year old he wants to give his fans more inspirational music as he feels it is too old for him to be going back to his ‘Slim Shady’ persona. The chorus sung by Sia underlines and highlights the fact that both these artists believe that you should go with your gut instinct to overcome adversity.
Actors- Eminem and Sia, Eminem lip syncing the lyrics with Sia lip syncing the chorus. Also lots of fans which he will meet up with at the end.
Location- Eminem will be walking down a long road to correlate with his long career, constantly looking right and left with the lyrics syncing with flashbacks of different parts of his career. Sia will join him from the chorus and will continue walking along with him throughout the video.
Props/Costume- Eminem and Sia will both be wearing casual clothes, props can be all the awards eminem has won scattered along the road.
Selling point- Eminem is one of, if not the greatest rapper to date so he has devoted fans and in this video he will be personally talking directly to the fans. This shows the value he has for them and how it is a unique relationship. He wants to help his fans through struggle and show they can come out on top like himself.

IDEA 2- Bone Thugs N Harmony- Gone Ft Ricco Barrino
Concept- They are all trying to say that you should not miss them when they are dead, they will still be there in your hearts and you should remember them for all the things they have achieved in this life. They think that you should not mourn for them, just be happy that they are in a better world as they are strong in faith. They are Jehovas Witnesses.
Actors- Bone Thugs N Harmony, Ricco Barrino lip syncing to the rap lyrics and chorus respectively. Location- They will be in a graveyard as they are talking about death, and they will be talking to their loved ones at their houses, as they are telling them not to mourn their death, when it is their time to go it is their time to go.
Props/Costume- Casual, laid-back clothes that they wear at home, shows how they are comfortable in their houses. Props will be the house setting and graveyard setting.
Selling point- it is quite an emotional song which you dont normally associate with Bone Thugs so this is looking at them in a different light, they are talking about death which can be a touchy subject but they are really open about it which doesnt make it awkward.

ITEM 3- Tinie Tempah- Like it or love it Ft Wretch 32 and J.Cole
Concept- These three rappers talk about how they came from the bottom and are now at the top living luxury life. They also talk about how they are the greatest, and how other people are trying to steal their styles but they can’t because they are not good enough to be on their levels.
Actors- The three rappers, as well as their crews and friends, lots of women. They will be lip syncing to the rap lyrics.
Location- they can be in their luxury houses, as it shows the wealth they now have. It is a song which is about them enjoying themselves, so they can be in a club having fun.
Props/Costume- house settings and club settings, they will be wearing smart, expensive clothes. Selling point- They are living life now that they are rich. It is a contrast to what they have come from. They are finally at the top.
